Recently my brother Matt and I decided to escape the city one last time before the weather got too cold. We packed up his Land Rover Series III and headed to the Pine Barrens National Forest in New Jersey for some off-roading and camping. Although we were only an hour away from the city, the Pine Barrens are deep enough that we barely came in contact with anyone the entire trip.
More pictures after the click. Sorry for the low quality, my camera broke and I was left with the iphone.
Matt has been restoring his ’75 Land Rover for the past year and has already rebuilt the diesel engine from the bottom up. He’s even installed a solar panel on the roof to power his extra goodies.
We made it about 10 miles before we had to stop for a quick repair.
Matt’s not afraid to get a little dirty.
My view from inside the truck. The rover handled these trails like freshly paved blacktop.
Fording some deep water. It was about 2 1/2′ deep in the ruts.
Matt relaxing in his hammock after setting up camp.
Keepin it real with flint and steel.
Mario Batali preparing our camping feast. Maple glazed salmon and rice.
The baby Weber in action.
An extra large bottle of Oatmeal Stout and some Woodford to take the chill off.
Although it rained all night, Matt didn’t seem to notice in his mummy bag. I however slept in the tent.
Enjoying a morning pipe.
Heading out. Can’t wait to go back when it’s all frozen.
